Combating violence against women

KARACHI- Activists have called for the formation of a “Task Force”, by the Sindh Departments of Women Development and Human Rights respectively, within a month’s time to formulate a framework for the elimination of violence against women.

This recommendation was forwarded at the launching ceremony of the quarterly report on “Situation of Violence against Women — April to June 2008, at a session organised by Aurat Foundation.

Researcher and activist, Kauser Khan said that the murder of 132 women in the given three months closely followed by 55 other instances of women killing under the pretext of Karo Kari and varied other “confirmed” cases of violence against them reflected the severity of the situation.

The data collected to compile the report was said to be mainly based on FIRs registered across the province and government. Kausar, on the behalf of NGOs working for the cause of women rights of life and dignity, offered all needed assistance for the formation of the task force assigned with the responsibility to develop guidelines for protection of women and girls.

Sindh Minister for Human Rights, Nabila Gabol launched the quarterly report on Situation of Violence against Women. The ceremony also coincided with discussions on Customary Practices and Law Enforcement. Lala Hassan of Aurat Foundation was the moderator of the program. While Hina Tabassum Siddiqui presented the report and Malka Khan offered their vote of thanks.
