PESHAWAR: The provincial chief minister on Tuesday gave officials three days to come up with a plan to start work on the Safe City Project in Peshawar, stressing that further delays in the project will not be tolerated.

This was directed by Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa (K-P) Chief Minister Mahmood Khan while chairing a high-level meeting regarding the project in Peshawar on Tuesday. Senior officials from the Lahore Safe City project and the police department also attended the meeting.

Mahmood stated that once fully implemented in Peshawar, the project will be extended to all divisional headquarters of the province.

In this regard, the CM was told that the project is based on four major components including an Integrated Emergency Response System, an Integrated Intelligent Counter-Surveillance System, Intelligent Traffic Management System and Electronic Evidence Management System.

Under the Integrated Emergency Response System, an emergency call centre will be established for citizens which will provide prompt response on emergency calls by coordinating with the concerned quarters such as Rescue 1122, the fire brigade, police and the district administration.

The Integrated Intelligent Counter-Surveillance System will see the installation of Internet Protocol Network Video (IPNV) cameras will be installed throughout the city along with vehicular cameras for surveillance and collection of evidence from the entire city. After completion of formalities, videos captured by these cameras will be acceptable in courts.

The Intelligent Traffic Management System will help in the real-time monitoring of traffic in the city while it will also monitor traffic violations and the use of illegal vehicles to promptly issue e-challans.

Mahmood hoped that the project will help establish a centralised mechanism through which the government can monitor everything happening in Peshawar from elections, to natural disasters, to terrorism-related incidents, traffic situation, Muharram processions, VIP visits, rallies, and markets etc.
