KARACHI: Social media is generally used for entertainment purpose, but it is also helping flourish businesses as the Internet users’ interest ratio shows that corporate sector pages are the most popular pages on facebook in Pakistan.

Facebook has become the most used social network in Pakistan with 8.5 million users recorded in April 2013. Keeping in view popularity of facebook the business organisations of the country have been very active on the site for the last few years to attract consumers and keep them updated about their products.

According to the internationally recognised website Socialbakers, that keeps the social Internet traffic statistics for across the world, in Pakistan business and telecom brands getting attention of country fellows such as OLX Pakistan, the buying and selling portal, continued its growth and it has crossed the 1.92 million fans mark in Pakistan out of total 2 million worldwide. By this it has become the most popular page of the country in any social media network.

Socialbakers Director of PR and Communications Maie Crumpton replying to Daily Times query said that she was afraid that Facebook and YouTube do not provide user numbers by country. The only figures publicly announced were in the second quarter (April to June) of 2013 when Facebook stated that it has 1.155 billion users in the entire world, an increase of 45 million users over last quarter. Mobile monthly active users have grown by 51 percent last year to 819 million.

Link between business and facebook could be ascertained by this that revenue of facebook worldwide in second quarter of 2013 was $1.81 billion, of which $1.59 billion was from advertising. Around 41 percent of all advertising revenue came from mobile advertising, which is a huge jump as compared to last quarter’s 30 percent, she added.

Meanwhile, Intel is the second most liked brand on facebook in Pakistan with a total 1.4 million local fans while it has 21.3 million followers around the world. Nokia Pakistan is the third popular facebook page with total 1.39 million local fans; Ufone is the fourth popular facebook page in the country with 1.3 million fan base.

The 14th Street Pizza based in Karachi is included in the pioneers who started using facebook as a marketing tool for promoting the business in Pakistan. They have an active facebook page with over 991,914 fans. This marketing tool brings them massive sales every day. It stands number five in the list of top 10 popular facebook pages in Pakistan, according to Socialbakers.

Mobilink stands on number six with a total of 959,604 local fans on facebook, Pizza Hut Pakistan page has 935,694 local fans; Zong is on number seven in the top 10 brands list with 880,259 local fans and Samsung Pakistan is also getting attention of localities day by day as it stands on number eight with 873,132 fans. Pantene Pakistan stands last but not the least in the top 10 brands on facebook list in Pakistan with a total of 769,752 local fans.

Similarly Socialbakers also revealed that YouTube was being viewed worldwide. According to them in Pakistan Nestle vista is the most viewed business brand channel on YouTube with 419,596 views of uploaded videos on it. Followed by Pantene Pakistan channel with 111,409 views, L’oreal Pakistan with 77,789 local views, Garnier Pakistan channel with 38,648 views, official Warid’s channel with 16,381 views and Gul Ahmed channel on YouTube stands number six in top viewed brands channels on Youtube in Pakistan with 11,919 views.

It could be said that social media in general and facebook in particular offer enormous marketing potential businesses in Pakistan.
