Body formed to handle media complaint
KARACHI – The Council of Pakistan Newspaper Editors (CPNE) has decided to set up a ‘Media Complaint Commission’ to address complaints about violations of press freedom and code of conduct.
The commission will decide about complaints lodged by members of the public or groups against newspapers for any violation of the code of conduct, and those lodged by newspapers against the government or any group for obstructing press freedom.
The decision to form the commission was taken at a meeting of the CPNE standing committee held under the chairmanship of CPNE vice-president Mehmoodul Aziz on June 2.
CPNE general-secretary Dr. Jabbar Khatak said in a press statement that the council felt that the government was deliberately not establising the Press Council despite passing a law to this effect.
