Babar’s family still awaiting justice

Karachi: The family of Wali Khan Babar, a young Geo News reporter who was killed on January 13 last year, is still waiting for justice.

Dr Azam Khan Babar, brother of the slain journalist, told The News at Quran Khwani for Babar, held at the Karachi Press Club (KPC) on Friday, that he was not satisfied with the proceedings because the remaining accused in the case had not yet been arrested.

Most of the police officers who were conducting the investigations have gone on leave. On the first death anniversary of Babar, he said, “I wish to tell all that we will not give up our fight for justice. Even the last member of our family will fight for justice in this case.

“After the arrest of four accused in the case, we had hoped that there would be some developments but nothing happened.” He said, “I don’t know what the hold-up is but I think we should have heard something by now,” said Dr Azam.

He said that his mother died remembering Wali. “I once told her that I can bring you all, but not Wali back.” He said in a sad tone, “They had suffered every day since Wali’s death. “The last one year had been a nightmare for us. Every day is a struggle and it’s hard to get over it. I feel let down by everything and I’m very bitter. It just feels like yesterday that I was told he had died — the pain never goes away.”

Dr Azam said that Wali was like a candle snuffed out before its time, in shameful circumstances, and his memory deserved a good deal more honour. He was a person of extraordinary courage and determination. He was — and continued to be till his end — the example of a journalist who spoke of his own conscience, not putting the blame on circumstances and not submitting to them.
