Attempt to smuggle out 2,000 PTV tapes foiled

LAHORE: Army personnel deputed at PTV Centre Lahore last week foiled an attempt to smuggle out 2000 tapes of important programmes by those loyal to Nawaz Sharif.

This was stated by ex-general manager of PTV Centre Lahore Shahid Nadeem, while addressing a news conference here on Wednesday. He said these elements could do any desperate act to hide their corruption.

PTV had always been controlled and used by the party in-power but the way Nawaz government misused it, was unparalleled in its 25-year history, he said. Nawaz Sharif appointed his right-hand man suspended Senator Pervez Rashid as PTV and PBC chairman. It was the first time that an active politician was appointed as the chairman, setting aside all rules and regulations, he said.

Similarly, Yousuf Beig Mirza, a close relative of Kulsoom Nawaz, by profession was an accountant and had no talent or experience to justify his appointment as PTV MD. His only credit was his job as sales executive at Zee TV. Mirza’s only contribution was an interview of Nawaz Sharif on Zee TV to which he arranged during Nawaz’s election campaign in 1997, Shahid Nadeem said.

PTV’s current affairs programmes were used to facilitate the imposition of Sharif family rule over the country. All institutions were humiliated with the help of PTV.

“PTV was used to create artificial crises after every few months to divert the public attention from real issues and rationalise Nawaz’s goals of establishing dictatorship in Pakistan.”

Challenging the profit figures recently shown by PTV, Shahid Nadeem said the claim was not based on facts. He said PTV has announced a profit of Rs 200 million but the fact is that the salaries for the current month were paid out by taking an overdraft from the banks.

“The real situation is that according to PTV’s own record, on September 3, 1999, an amount of over Rs one billion was yet to be recovered from the market and large chunk of it may never be recovered as either the parties have fled or clients were fake. With such a huge recoverable amount, talking of profit is hypothetical.”

He also demanded the reinstatement of PTV employees, who were sacked by the Nawaz government.
