Attack on newsman condemned

KARACHI- The editorial staff of The News Karachi condemned the kidnapping and torture on one chief reporter of The News Rawalpindi, Shakil Shaikh and described the act as an attack on freedom of the press.

A meeting of the reporters, presided over by head of the reporting, Ibrahim Khan, passed a resolution and expressed profound sympathy with Shakil and demanded of the authorities to immediately arrest the culprits.

Secretary of Information, Sindh, Mirza Karim Baig, slated the kidnapping and beating of Shakeel Shaikh. In a statement, he said the government would endeavor its utmost to arrest the culprits involved in the gruesome act. He said the government believes in freedom of the press and would not allow anybody to harm the journalists engaged in performing their duties.

A former minister Javed Jabbar also condemned the attack and said that the government should urgently take all steps to detect and identify the culprits and bring them to justice, he demanded.

Secretary General Pakistan Muslim League (PML) Sindh, Capt Haleem Siddiqi, the Sindh Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) chief Nisar Khuhro, Taj Haider and Muzaffar Shijra, and Muttahida Quami Movement (MQM) leaders Afaq Ahmed and Aamir Khan demanded of the government to take action against the responsible persons.
