Assault on girl student: WAF calls for arrest of accused

HYDERABAD: A large number of activists of the Women Action Forum and civil society held a demonstration outside the press club here on Thursday, condemning sexual assault on a 15-year-old girl student in Faiz Ganj by some school teachers.

Leaders of the forum Ms Amar Sindhu, Irfana Mallah, Rehana Channar and Najma Mallah demanded that the government should ensure that the accused were arrested immediately because their crime was not only despicable but it would also discourage female education.

They urged the government to take affective steps to restore girls’ confidence in teachers by awarding exemplary punishment to the perpetrators of this heinous crime.

They regretted that some people associated with the ruling party were trying to use their political influence to protect the criminals and made it clear that pressure on the girl’s parents or any compromise would not be accepted.

They appealed to the judiciary to cancel bail of the accused and reminded the chief minister that this incident had taken place in his own constituency.

They called upon the Sindh education minister to appoint female teachers in the girls’ schools and colleges.

DEMO: A large number of students of the Mehran and Sindh universities held a demonstration under the banner of Jeay Sindh Students Federation and staged a sit-in outside the press club here on Thursday, in protest against attack on Sindhi students of the Quaid-i-Azam University Islamabad and their rustication.

Federation leaders warned that if rustication orders were not withdrawn, they would be constrained to launch a movement.
