Art in all its simplicity

KARACHI: There are no apparently senseless blobs of clashing colours, no symbols that require of one to resort to mental acrobatics to fathom as to what it could be all about. They are plain and simple paintings in black and white, gouache on wasli, and their beauty lies in their simplicity and also because his subjects are so very familiar to the viewer.

The exhibition of artist Ayaz Jokhio’s works which opened at the Canvas Art Gallery recently, is a refreshing change after the myriads of art exhibitions in town patronizing modern art which is all Latin to the amateur. Jokhio’s works are the one’s one could find beauty and pleasure in firstly because they are not abstract, and secondly because the landmarks he paints or draws are often household words, or are familiar landmarks. For instance, his work titled, “Wazir Khan Mosque” is not only something that is a piece of art but for many, it may have a dual appeal, for those who may be originally from Lahore and for whom it may evoke nostalgia and memories.

Another innovation Jokhio has introduced is the dual sketches. One side of the canvas depicts a certain aspect of the subject and you turn the picture over and there’s another aspect of the same subject. For instance, the work on Wazir Khan Mosque shows a close-up of the structure’s architecture and you turn the picture over and it is the area around the mosque with more emphasis on the surroundings than the mosque itself, an area synonymous with culinary delights.

However, Jokhio doesn’t only deal with physical surroundings but moods and emotions as well. His work, Actress, depicts a middle-aged lady with disheveled hair and ostensibly in a merry mood, beaming away. You turn the picture over and it is the same actress in a more pensive and thoughtful mood, the Cheshire cat smile having gone.

Jokhio has not lost touch that essence of being, time. One side of his work, “The Student, the teacher” depicts a young debonair student. You turn it over and it is that very student with more mellowed looks, mellowed with time.

Jokhio, a graduate of the National College of Art (NCA) has a large number of solo, dual, and group exhibitions to his credit. Besides, he also has a large number of short films and documentaries to his credit.
