Are you ‘addicted’ to your smart phone?

Pakistan Press Foundation

Sir: Do you constantly check your mobile phone for e-mail alerts, Facebook notifications, tweets, news updates and the weather report? This is not our fault; it is not a disease that can be cured — it is an addiction. Smart phone addiction is viral; we are forced to look at the 4.7 inch screen of our smart phone every five minutes or so. In youngsters, this addiction is at its peak. It would be a very rare event to find a young boy or girl without a mobile phone in his/her hand. Sociologists have warned that the popularity of e-mailing, text messaging and playing games on smart phones is affecting other important activities such as recreational reading and studying.

For most people, a smart phone is not a luxury but a necessity. People compete with each other to see who has the newest model. This explains why more and more people continue to invest in smart phones despite tough economic conditions. To own an expensive smart phone has become a status symbol. You are now known by the smart phone you own! If we cannot live without smart phones, we should learn how to use this gadget wisely. Families should find different ways to increase time spent having meaningful conversations and doing tasks involving all family members. It is not only smart phones that need to be smarter; users should also be smarter.
