Appointment of PTA acting head can’t create hurdle for 3G licence

Pakistan Press Foundation

ISLAMABAD: The government has not learnt the implications that occur due to giving someone acting charge of any department. Government has once again appointed an Acting Chairman of Pakistan Telecommunication Authority who might keep the new chairman under pressure and would also keep the door open for the government to make any changes any time thus arising doubts about its intentions.

Though appointment of an Acting Chairman fulfills the requirement for the PTA to act as an authority but giving the acting charge apparently gives an impression of a temporary arrangement. Certain quarters believe that such an act of the government is not understandable in the given situation and does not clarify the intentions of the authorities.

It is worth mentioning here that the government finally has filled the vacant posts in PTA. Certain quarters on the other side also believe that the 3 people appointed in PTA have good repute including the Acting Chairman of PTA Dr Syed Ismail Shah who was basically appointed as Member Technical and is given the additional charge of Acting Chairman of PTA.

Tariq Sultan has been appointed as Member (Finance) PTA. He remained DG Finance in PTA for several years and was currently working as Director General (Revenue Assurance) PTA. He holds MBA from IBA Karachi, Masters in Accounting and Finance from Manchester University and CIMA from Canada.

Contrary to the some quarter’s differences on the government’s decision of appointing Acting Chairman, they believe at the same time that technically it does not create any hurdle in the way of PTA to take important decisions including the launching of 3G licences.
