APNS flays burning of newspapers’ officers

KARACHI- Kazi Asad Abid, Secretary General, All Pakistan Newspapers Society (APNS), in a press statement has strongly condemned the mysterious burning of the offices of daily Balochistan Times and daily Zamana situated on 1.1. Chundrigar Road, Karachi, and noted with concern that such incidents appear an act of harassment to the newspapers.

Earlier, in Hyderabad the offices of daily Ummat and NNI were also attacked and ransacked by a group of miscreants, but no action has been taken by the administration. He lamented that the violence against the press has become a routine in the Sindh Province, which needs to be checked by the concerned authorities.

The APNS Secretary General expressed his sympathy and solidarity with Syed Fasih Iqbal, publisher of daily Balochistan Times and Zamana, Quetta, and urged upon the Sindh government to initiate a probe to ascertain the nature of the selective burning of the offices of newspapers and apprehend the culprits involved in this heinous crime.

He reiterated that the press freedom was an essential norm for the successful functioning of civil society in Pakistan. He also urged upon the Sindh Governor and the provincial administration to protect the print media from such elements who intend to harass and victimize the press.
