APNS decides minimum cover price formula for newspapers

LAHORE: The APNS has decided a minimum cover price formula for newspapers all over Pakistan at a meeting held on Monday (April 28). Later, the Akhbar Farosh Federation Pakistan was consulted at a meeting held here on Tuesday. The agreed formula effective from May 1, 2008 is as under:

Up to four pages Rs 4

Above four but less than eight Rs 5

Eight or above but less than 12 Rs 7

12 or more pages Rs 9 (Sunday editions Rs 12)

The cover price of English morning newspapers (except Sundays) will, however, be Rs 15.

The meeting was chaired by Arif Nizami, Convener APNS Distribution/Retail Marketing Committee, and attended by Tikka Khan, Secretary-General, and Ch Nazir Ahmad, Senior Vice-President Akhbar Farosh Federation, respectively. Mujeeb-ur-Rehman Shami, Chief Editor Daily Pakistan, and Zia Shahid, Chief Editor Daily Khabrain, also attended the meeting.

The meeting was assured by the Akhbar Farosh Federation that no newspaper violating the above formula would be distributed in the Akhbar Markets. It was also decided that all incentives in negation of the above formula would be curbed by the Akhbar Farosh bodies all over Pakistan. It was further decided that the hawkers/agentsí commission system would be regulated.

Earlier, a meeting of the sub-committee of the APNS Executive Committee was held under the chairmanship of Arif Nizami to discuss the unprecedented increase in newsprint and fuel prices, and decided to increase the cover price of newspapers and other related matters.

The APNS sub-committee meeting was attended by Arif Nizami, Convener, Jamil Athar, Senior Vice-President, Imtinan Shahid, Vice-President, Syed Sarmad Ali, Joint Secretary, Mujeeb-ur-Rehman Shami, Daily Pakistan, Syed Sajjad Hussain Shah, Daily Kainat/The Finance, Ilyas Shakir, Daily Qaumi Akhbar, Ishfaq Ullah Khan, Daily Express, Mehtab Khan, Daily Ausaf and Kashif Saeed, Daily Dawn.
