Ahle-Sunnat Wal Jamaat rally against film ends peacefully

Karachi: Thousands participated in a protest organised by the Ahle-Sunnat Wal Jamaat on Sunday against the anti-Islam film. The demonstration was taken out from Lasbella and marched on to Gurumandir.

Speaking to The News, spokesman for the ASWJ, Maulana Akbar Saeed, said that the rally ended peacefully and the party decided to postpone its march to the US Consulate. However, a delegation managed to present a memorandum to authorities at the Us Consulate.

The protesters demanded that the US and the West declare blasphemy against Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) as unlawful and punish anyone involved in such acts.

Authorities closed all the roads leading to the Red Zone and routes to the US consulate were sealed through containers. Meanwhile, MA Jinnah Road was also blocked off and strict security arrangements were made on all the routes leading to the major artery.

Heavy contingents of police and Rangers were deployed along the path of the rally. The participants chanted slogans against the US and vowed to sacrifice their lives to safeguard the sanctity of the Holy Prophet Hazrat Muhammad (PBUH).

The rally was held despite the fact that the Sindh government imposed Section 144, which banned all such demonstrations.
