Acid attack report sent to Shahbaz Sharif

LAHORE: The City Police Division (Investigation Wing) on Friday forwarded report to the chief minster pertaining to an acid attack on a nurse by her husband at the Mayo Hospital a few days ago.

SP City Multan Khan said: “The culprit would be dealt in accordance with the law and he might be hanged in the light of new legislation about the acid attack.” Before this legislation, he added, the culprits of acid attacks were awarded punishment of life imprisonment, but now according to the new laws the attacker would be hanged.

The report said the landlord Muhammad Irfan Younas Rajput, son of Muhammad Younas, of Babo Qawal, Narang Mandi, had revealed during interrogation that his wife Rehmana Liaqat, a nurse by profession, had allegedly developed illicit relations with three to four paramours in Lahore during her study tenure and professional field.

“She had refused to develop matrimonial relations with me from the very day of marriage contracted between us two years back pleading different medical complications,” said Irfan, adding then she left him and resettled in Lahore along with her maternal family.

“I have committed this crime under revengeful feelings as she had been continuously refusing to resume household responsibilities for the past two year and also to continue matrimonial relations with me,” Irfan confessed before the investigators.

He claimed to have frustrated over stressed situation and sprinkled liquid acid at his wife while she was sitting at a corner in ward No 2 of Emergency Department of the Mayo Hospital on Wednesday evening. Subsequently, the left side of her face, body parts and left hand of the aforesaid nurse were completely disfigured whereas two other nurses namely Shamsa Naaz and Shazia Emanuel, Aya Basheeran Bibi, ward cleaner Imran, and two patients Sabraan Bibi and Imran also sustained multiple injuries.

After committing the crime, the culprit tried to flee from the scene but the attendants and families captured him and handed him over to police, SHO Gowalmandi Saqlain Gondal told this scribe.

Quoting the report sent to the chief minister, the SHO further said the culprit was a landlord of Sheikhupura and got engaged with his cousin Rehmana of Daroghawala, Lahore some eight years back. Irfan said the girl cheated him. “I tried my best for reconciliation but she continued refusing, which provoked me to commit this crime,” Irfan further stated. The SHO said a case (241/12) under section 324 of PPC had been registered against him.
