A gagged press?

What happened in Lahore and Islamabad on World Press Freedom Day May 3 cannot be justified. All sane members of society found the baton charging of journalists distasteful. It unnecessarily damaged the image of the Pakistani government, internationally and domestically.

All past efforts made to give freedom to the media in Pakistan by a military ruler were tarnished with this one act — and there is no doubt that the President himself would have found this act undesirable. A prompt statement from his side expressing this could have saved the day. However, due to political expediencies of the day which are best understood by the powers that be, no such statement was made. In fact the committee which was to investigate the event was also disbanded.
