RAWALPINDI – As many as 7,797 women were subjected to various kinds of violence during the year 2003, which also included killing of 2,888 women, says the data collected by the Progressive Women Association (PWA).

According to the break-up, there were 1,746 cases of violence; 1,474 of murder; 1,445 of kidnapping/rape, 366 of burns, 355 of suicide and 233 of Karokari. Similarly, 294 women were killed by their husbands, 308 women were murdered by their brothers, 278 women were killed by their fathers, 122 women were killed by their sons and 972 were killed by their relatives.

The PWA has expressed concern over the rising incidents of violence against women and drawn attention of the authorities towards this grave issue. It has also demanded that the people who bring a victim of violence to a hospital should be identified to know their relationship with the latter, especially those belonging to the far-flung areas.

The organisation has questioned the reluctance of the health ministry to open burn centres in major medical institutions.
