44 women, 17 men murdered in karokari
Karachi–Ghotki district in Sindh recorded 25 cases of Karkari offences during the period from May 2009 to January 2010.
According to an official report Sukkur was behind Ghotki with 13 cases, Khairpur 9 and Naushehro Feroze with six cases.
Under these registered cases 12 women and 3 men were murdered in Sukkur, 21 women and six men in Ghotki, 5 women and 5 men in Khairpur and 6 women and 3 men in Naushehro Feroz.
In these cases 28 out of 9 nominated accused were arrested in Sukkur, 27 out of 65 in Ghotki, 7 out of 20 in Khairpur and 5 out out of 19 in Naushehro Feroz.
According to the report an over all 53 cases of karo kari were registered in the four districts and out of them 41 were challaned.
Under Karo Kari, cases of murder of 44 women and 17 men were registered in these districts and 47 out of 133 nominated accused arrested.
Reviewing the report the Sindh Home Minister Dr Zulfikar Ali Mirza directed the police to extend all cooperation to complaint cells setup by Sindh Government in Karachi, Sukkur, Larkana and Hyderabad so that timely action could be taken on complaints registered at these centres.
The establishment of these cells is aimed at providing timely legal and other assistance to affected women.
According to the Minister in Sindhi culture and civilization, great respect is given to woman and the number of those who murder women in the name of honor and feel pride on it is very low.
He said that Sindh Government is taking all necessary steps for elimination of menace of karo kari.
The Home Minister has directed PPO Sindh to take steps for setting up of Karo kari Cells in all the districts of Sindh so that exploitation of innocent women in the name of Karo kari and their murder is controlled.
The Sindh Police has, in cooperation with UNDP, launched a formal project whereby Karo kari cells have been established in the four districts where there had been higher reporting of cases of Karo kari. These districts included Sukkur, Ghotki, Khairpur and Naushehro feroz.
