40 video shops blown up in Mingora

MINGORA: As many as forty video shops were destroyed when explosives planted inside two adjacent CD and video markets went off simultaneously here on Friday morning.

However, no loss to life was caused as the incident occurred at 4 am when no one was in the market. Eyewitnesses told The News that over two-dozen shops were completely razed to the ground at Meena Bazaar’s CD and Video Market, causing losses worth millions of rupees.

Nearby houses were also damaged by the power explosions. It merits a mention here that two unidentified motorcyclists had warned watchman of the markets, Deedar, some days back to leave his job as they were going to destroy them.

According to the watchman, the militants had called the markets as epicentres of obscenity. Police had already been informed of the militants warning. Some days back video shops had been destroyed in the same fashion in Matta town after sending of threatening letters to owners of such concerns.

Agencies add: According to a private TV channel, at least nineteen plastic slipper stores, twenty seven shops of video and one shop of mobile have been completely destroyed. Offices of Aaj TV, Online and Daily Times were also partially damaged. The devices planted at the shops were so powerful that on explosion their bangs were heard miles away.

Station House Officer Mingora Police Station Ali Rehmat told the agency that the act was meant to create harassment among the CD and video shop owners. In another incident, unidentified persons fired at a police checkpost at Nawan Kalan.
