22 more TV channel licenses to be issued

KARACHI – Sheikh Rashid Ahmed, Federal Minister for Information and Media Development, has informed the business community that the government will issue 22 more TV channel licenses by the end of next month.

Addressing members of the managing committee of Federation of Pakistan Chambers of Commerce and Industry at the Federation House in Karachi on September 9, he said that the government has already accorded licenses to seven TV channels.

“The public is viewing around 50 TV channels on cable network,” the minister said, adding, soon they will have facility to view around 300 channels.” He advised the FPCCI to own its own TV channel to project the country’s image, economic development, goods produced in Pakistan, business activities, investment climate and for advertising their products etc.

He said that the government wanted to develop a very strong media in the country. “Now the country has a very competent man in the driving seat of the government as the prime minister,” he said and hoped that the country would soon feel positive economic changes in the country.

He said: “Foreign reserves of the country have crossed 12 billion dollars but it is not enough to depend on these reserves, as the general public wants jobs, like to see prices coming down or stand at an affordable limit. “It is time that the business community should come forward and start investing in the country to create more jobs.”

He advised the businessmen to adopt modem techniques in production of goods to meet the export requirement. He also advised them that they should invest in such projects that require manpower in sufficient number. “Present modern production techniques, he said, also played a vital role in reducing number of jobs in the country.

He advised the businessmen to jointly prepare their own master plan for economic development of the country and added that the government is ready to provide all possible support to them. He said that the prime minister has very strong desire to economically develop the country. “He needs the support of the business community to achieve his objective,” he added.

Welcoming the guest, Riaz Ahmed Tata, president FPCCI, sought the support of the government for developing a strategy to improve the image of the abroad to attract foreign investment.
