WWO meeting held, protection for women stressed

LAHORE: A meeting of Working Women Organisation (WWO) was held in Lahore under the chairmanship of Robina Jamil. Town committee members and office-bearers of the organisation including Robina Jamil, Hafiza Nisar, Atia Nasir, Uzma Ijaz, Khalida Ashraf and Sajida Karamat were present.

In her address, Robina said that ever since the inception of the organisation, we have been striving hard to end sexual harassment and violence against women. WWO has always expressed concern over the issue. She also said that political governments advocating equal rights for women have failed to formulate a policy to end crimes against women. Statistics show that 8,000 cases were registered in 2010 for violence including 2,236 cases of abduction, 486 cases of domestic violence, 633 cases of suicide and 557 cases of honour killing. However, 928 cases of gang-rape and many other crimes were excluded as these were not registered. Statistics also show a 13 percent increase in cases of violence against women as compared to 2009.

WWO is educating women to demand severe punishment to the culprits involved in crimes against women, including sexual harassment and violence.

Robina said that WWO will start a 16-day campaign in collaboration with the All Pakistan Trade Union Federation from November 25 to December 10, 2011.

She also said that the government should make laws to protect women and award severe punishments to the culprits involved. She further said that WWO would continue its struggle to end these crimes.
