WorldCall to invest $30 million in optic fibre cable

KARACHI- WorldCall Broadband Limited will invest $ 30 million to install over 200 km optic fibre cable in Karachi, and the service is expected to start within three months.

The technology of ‘Hybrid Fibre Coaxial’ (HFC) cable network allows simultaneous transmission of video data and voice communications. A sister concern, WorldCall Multimedia Limited, has already established such a network in Lahore which was the first of its kind in Pakistan.

The network in Karachi will be second of its kind in Pakistan. Unlike all existing cable networks in Karachi, this network will have two-way transmission capability, and WorldCall Broadband will be able to offer high quality cable television channels and high-speed internet to residential and corporate subscribers.

The technology also allows attractive pricing of these services, especially the internet access services.

WorldCall also plans to offer additional services such as Video-on-Demand, Pay-Per-View, Distance Learning, Video Conferencing etc.

After expiry of monopoly of Pakistan Telecommunication Company Limited (PTCL) in December, 2002, WorldCall plans to offer telephone services.

The network would be constructed over three phases covering Clifton, Defence, Saddar, PECHS, Gulshan-e-Iqbal, Federal ‘B’ Area, North Nazimabad, Gulistan-e-Johar and adjoining areas. The plan would be completed in two years. The service in Clifton area will be started within three months.
