World Press Freedom Day on May 3

LAHORE,May 02:World Press Day would be observed on Thursday May 3, 2007 throughout the world including Pakistan. Journalists organisations like South Asia Free Media Association (SAFMA), Pakistan Federal Union of Journalists (PFUJ), Punjab Union of Journalists (PUJ) and other journalists’ bodies will organise different programmes to highlight the press freedom issues in country on this day.As many as 110 journalists were murdered and 134 found imprisoned throughout the world according to an annual worldwide report issued by the World Association of Newspapers (WAN) in this connection.

Middle East and South Africa were proved as most dangerous where 49 journalists were murdered, 5 were murdered in Africa, 25 in America, 27 in Asia, 4 in Europe and Central Asia according to WAN census. Similarly 134 journalists were sent to jails in 24 countries of the world. The five top countries where journalists were jailed last year included China 31, Cuba 24, Eritrea 23, Ethiopia 18 and Burma 7.

According to another report released by Committee to Protect Journalists, North Korea, Burma, Turkmenistan, Libya, Uzbekistan, Syria, Belarus, Equatorial Guinea and Eritrea were among the top ten countries where the press was working under the worst censorship and journalists cannot work freely.
