LAHORE: There is a need to increase awareness of all stakeholders in order to address the challenges pertaining to across-the-board enforcement of labour laws, said Punjab Labour and Human Resource Minister Raja Ashfaq Sarwar.

“The Punjab government is complying with the international labour standards and related labour rights defined by the ILO (International Labour Organization) and other organisations,” he said while chairing a meeting on Monday.

The minister stressed the need for creation of such an environment that fostered productive atmosphere marked by freedom, equality, security and rights. “Such conditions will pull working women and men out of poverty and sustain socio-economic development,” he remarked.

Sarwar said an educated and trained workforce together with improved Human Development Indicators was essential for competitiveness and compliance with global standards.

He said the provincial government was taking concrete measures to improve the working conditions by improving wages of workers, ensuring payment of minimum wage, regulating working hours, ensuring health and safety of labourers.

The minister called for gender equality, enhancement of skilled labour and eradication of child and bonded labour.
