Women empowerment: PPP to follow Nusrat’s strategy

By M.B. Kalhoro

NAUDERO: The Central Executive Committee and Federal Council of the Pakistan People’s Party at a special session here on Wednesday paid tribute to the leadership of Begum Nusrat Bhutto and vowed to pursue the strategy for empowerment of women in line with her vision.

PPP Chairman Bilawal Bhutto Zardari and Co-chairperson Asif Ali Zardari jointly presided over the meeting at the camp office
of the President House.

PPP General Secretary Jahangir Badar, Information Secretary Qamar Zaman Kaira and Federal Information Minister Firdous Ashiq Awan briefed newsmen after the meeting.

The meeting recalled sacrifices rendered by Begum Bhutto for the restoration of democracy.

Nusrat Bhutto fought against Gen Zia-ul-Haq after the fall of Z.A. Bhutto’s government in 1977. When the PPP workers were whipped and jailed, she brought together all democratic forces under one umbrella, they said. When big leaders left the party, she worked as a binding force and led the struggle for democracy, they added.

Mr Kaira recalled Begum Bhutto was seriously injured at Qadhafi Stadium while struggling for the cause of democracy and that injury led to her death. She was a victim of state terrorism, he said.

The meeting unanimously resolved to follow in her footsteps and endorsed the government’s decision of giving her the title of ‘Mother of Democracy’. It decided to publish a book encompassing her struggle for the restoration of democracy, her days in jail and sacrifices by PPP workers. The book will be launched before the first death anniversary of Begum Bhutto.

Through a resolution, the meeting decided to remember her as ‘Mother of Democracy’ in all speeches and writing. The meeting renewed the pledge to carry forward the mission of Benazir Bhutto and Begum Nusrat Bhutto till the “final victory of people”.

Participants of the meeting reposed confidence in the leadership of Bilawal Bhutto Zardari and Asif Ali Zardari.
