Women and police service

Sir: The role of women police officers in the police service has been limited and even after the establishment of women police stations, they have not yet been provided with the resources and facilities that would allow them to perform at their utmost capacity.

It has also been observed that many of the seats reserved for women officers remain vacant due to social taboos surrounding female police officers. Females are neither encouraged to join the police force nor do they prefer to join it – again, due to social factors. As half of our population comprises of females, it is imperative that their representation in the police force be increased and societal attitudes towards female participation in policing be changed.
