Woman tortured by in-laws

LARKANA: A young woman married off to settle a karo-kari dispute was tortured and her hair was partially shaved allegedly by her in-laws in Darya Khan Unnar village near Ratodero on Sunday.

Abida Kharos, 25, a mother of two, told journalists in Ratodero Taluka Hospital that her brothers-in-law Altaf and Aijaz and father-in-law Arbab Kharos had beaten her with rods causing cuts and bruises on her face. They also shaved part of her hair, she said.

Her brother Abdul Jabbar who had brought her to the hospital said that about 15 years ago his uncle Mumtaz Kharos had been accused of having illicit relations with a woman of the family of Arbab Kharos. After a jirga elders had decided to settle the dispute by giving two girls of their family in marriage to the family of Arbab.

Four years ago, Abida was married to Mohanmad Haneef Kharos, son of Arbab. However, the other marriage was delayed because the bride-to-be was 11 years old, Jabbar said.

He said that Abida’s in-laws had detained one of her sons.

Illahi Bakhsh Kharos, father of Abida, has lodged an FIR with Ratodero police station against Altaf, Aijaz, Arbab and Riaz Kharos for torturing her daughter. Police raided the houses of the accused but they had left the place.

It is learnt that the in-laws had got Abida’s husband Haneef arrested. The DPO of Larkana is reported to have ordered his release.
