Wasim Sajjad slates action against Geo Super

Muhammad Saleh Zaafir

ISLAMABAD: Leader of opposition in the Senate and distinguished jurist Barrister Wasim Sajjad while condemning restrictions on Geo Super has announced that the opposition would agitate the question of unfair action against the most popular channel of the country in the upper house of Parliament today (Friday).

“It is not only injustice to the prime and popular TV channel of the country but a deliberate attempt to usurp the freedom of press,” he said. Talking to The News exclusively on Thursday evening Wasim Sajjad said that Geo Super has been providing unabated recreation to millions of people who need leisure badly because the government has made the life of common man miserable through its misdeeds.

The intelligentsia, civil society, genuine political leadership and all segments of society stand by Geo as it is the voice of common man. The Geo channel has become a household name in the country since it has been producing most popular programmes, catering to the taste of the people of different age groups in all sections of society.

He was of the opinion that the whole society should rise above petty politics and differences and come forward to save the freedom of media. “We will raise our voice in support of Geo in the houses of the parliament and outside alike. Any attempt on press freedom would be tantamount to an attack on democracy,” he added.

Attaching due importance to the matter, Barrister Wasim Sajjad said that the action against Geo Super cannot be taken lightly since it is an attack on the economy of the channel that is providing unbiased and honest coverage of the events taking place in and outside the country. The leader of the opposition in the upper house of the parliament assured that question of injustice with the Geo would also be raised in the National Assembly on priority basis next week when it will be commencing its fourth parliamentary year.

He impressed upon the government to desist from tactics to browbeat the media as such actions are always counterproductive and bring embarrassment to the governments. Barrister Wasim Sajjad expressed his solidarity with the workers of the Geo channel and assured complete support in their struggle against the tyranny of the government.
