Villagers block road over killing of girl

HYDERABAD, July 11 2006: The residents of village Sadiq Leghari on July 10 blocked Miran Muhammed Shah road for three hours against the killing of a girl while the accused persons have charged them with blackmail for illegally occupying agricultural lands. Dozens of residents of village Sadiq Leghari in district Tando Allahyar blocked the road outside the Hyderabad press club under the aegis of the Awami Tehreek and raised slogans against the Nawabs of Tajpur for killing a girl.

Muhammad Sadiq, Sher Khan and others told newsmen that the Nawabs killed the girl on June 28 and injured others and were trying to evict them from their land. They further said that despite registration of case against the Nawabs for killing the minor girl, the Tando Allahyar police were not arresting them and the accused were roaming freely. They said the villagers have been warned of dire consequences in case they continue to protest. They said that they would not leave their village and appealed to higher authorities, including the chief justice of Pakistan, for provision of justice to them, otherwise, they would observe fast unto death.

They also demanded action against the police and influentials of the area for supporting the accused. Meanwhile, addressing a press conference the Nawabs of Tajpur, Nawab Gulzar Leghari, Ghulam Rasool, Noor Illahi Leghari, and Iftikhar Leghari, on July 10 denied the charges levelled by the protesting villagers, saying that the land was the property of Tajpurs. They said the protesting villagers are blackmailing them for continuing their illegal occupation of the agricultural lands in Tando Allahyar and trying to gain sympathies of media through demonstrations.

They said that the girl was not killed but died of medical complications and a the protesters were lying to pressurise the Nawabs of Tajpur. They said these protesters were criminals and keep changing their places. They said peace in the area couldn’t be restored until the vacation of lands from illegal occupation and demanded immediate action against the villagers. They demanded of the administration for getting their lands released from illegal occupation and withdrawal of fake cases against their relatives.
