A three day Journalism Journalism Training Workshop for district correspondents from various parts of Balochistan was organized by Pakistan Press Foundation (PPF), in collaboration with The Asia Foundation (TAF) at Ziarat from June 26 - 28, 2004. The theme of the workshop was Media and Democratic Governance with special focus on poverty.

This was the third workshop in a series of six, aimed at promoting understanding of the working journalists on selected themes and improving the writing skills of newsmen from districts working for various national and regional newspapers, radio and television stations. The participants consisted of 8 women and 9 men, consisting of working journalists and free lance writers

The trainers of the workshop were …
- Sahar Ali, Coordinator TAF
- Fazal Qureshi, Vice Chairperson PPF
- Owais Aslam Ali, Secretary General PPF

The key objectives of the workshop were:

1. To promote conceptual understanding of governance, democratic governance and poverty among district journalists and to enable identification of local poverty issues for feature - writing

2. To train district journalists in the basic journalistic skill of feature-writing.

For conceptual clarity on poverty, the training drew on the recently concluded Pakistan Participatory Poverty Assessment to deepen the understanding of the causes and manifestations of poverty. The Sustainable Livelihoods Framework was introduced to help participants analyze poverty.

The workshop used many interactive tools. It included a theater performance by IRC and the Jaag Theater Group from Bahawalnagar. The theme of the theater was poverty, and it focused on the issues of brick klin workers in Punjab.

In the area of skills development, participants were trained to write features through instructive and interactive sessions. They were given checklists and taught good practices. They learned about criteria for selecting topics for features, preparing outlines, structuring a feature article, as well as identifying and selecting secondary sources of information.

Practical exercises on writing and reviewing features helped them put their newly-acquired skills to use. Each participant received individual feedback from trainers as well as peers on his/her feature.

Dr. Seemin N
aghmana, Chairperson Mass Communication Department University of Balochistan, also visited the workshop on June 27 and addressed the participants. She advised the participants to take full advantage of the workshop teaching programmes for improving their professional performance in accordance with changing trends of the society.

Mr. Mohammad Zahir, Tehsil Nazim Ziarat, said using pen is dangerous than raising sword. He asked journalists to write for highlighting problems of common people without any fear. He advised participants to pay special attention to issues like the serious threat of extinction faced by the invaluable Juniper forests of Ziarat. He mentioned that yellow journalism is being used as a tool to harass and threat public representatives. He asked journalists not to go for yellow journalism as it was causing disrepute to the profession. He said there was a need to train public representatives for working and dealing with media. He thanked PPF for organizing the workshop.

Mr. Owais Aslam Ali, Secretary General PPF, urged the participants of the workshop to get into the habit of writing. He said for good writing, it is important to read more, write more and set a deadline for the completion of the write - up. He suggested participants to maintain a diary for noting important points and their observations. He said these collected thoughts and ideas can be very helpful for a write - up. He asked them to discover their passions and develop their interests through discussion and reading.

Mr. Ali told participants to concentrate on local issues that affect women. He informed that PPF was creating a network of concerned journalists. He asked women journalists to become a part of the network so that they could benefit from each other.

He asked participants to complete and send the features, to newspapers / magazines, they wrote in the workshop. He said freelance journalists can send their features to PPF feature service.

The three day workshop ended on June 28 with distribution of certificates to the participants by Mr. Mohammad Zakir Khan. Other special guests who attended the closing session included Mir Alam Afghan, Juniper Environmental Officer, Mr. Munir Ahmed, Coordinator District Literacy Programme Ziarat and Mr. Abdul Hannan Kakar, Principal Al-Hamd Model school.
