Two sisters hang themselves over ‘forced marriage’

LAHORE: Two sisters in Manawan Police precincts hanged themselves on Monday, reportedly after a row with their mother who was marrying them forcefully to men they did not want to marry.

DSP Ali Ahmed Dogar said the two sisters, Maqboolan, 24, and Shagufta, 18, residents of Rehmat Town, had had an argument with their motherover their marriage. At about noon, when their mother left to purchase grocery for the day and their father Mohammad Latif, a chicken seller, had left for work, both the sisters hanged themselves using ropes of a swing in their home.

The DSP said that the police had found the girls dead under ‘mysterious circumstances’ and suspected that the deceased’s family was not telling the truth.

The DSP said that the mother claimed she had found her daughters dead on her return from the market. She said she immediately informed her husband and the police about the incident. The police reached the scene and took the bodies to the city morgue for autopsy.

The deceased’s father said both his daughters were unhappy with their fiancés. He said his daughters did not want to marry at the time, but he and his wife wanted otherwise. He said both his daughters had frequently argued with him and his wife. He said he had five sons and a daughter left.
