Torture on mediamen: 3 SHOs suspended so far

PESHAWAR: Three station house officers (SHOs) have been suspended for torturing media men in the last few weeks.

In the latest case, Hayatabad Police Station SHO Rajab Ali was suspended. He along with 15 cops allegedly tortured the bureau chief of a private TV, Shaukat Khattak, and his two colleagues for covering the situation at the Hayatabad Medical Complex after those injured in the suicide bombing at the mosque in Jamrud in Khyber Agency were brought there.

Two other SHOs, Abdur Rahman of Faqirabad Police Station and Asif Sharif of Hashtnagri, were suspended a few days ago for raiding the offices of local Urdu daily and torturing several employees including journalists.

Interestingly, no action was taken against the constables and head constables involved in the torture on journalists in both the incidents. A campaign has been launched at the provincial level to improve the relations between the police and the media. People having good reputation could play a role in bridging this gap.
