Three soldiers killed, 16 injured in NWA roadside blast

MIRANSHAH: Three security personnel were killed and 16 others were injured when a military convoy was targeted with an improvised explosive device (IED) in the Mir Ali subdivision in North Waziristan on Wednesday.

Security officials and tribal sources said a military convoy was on its way to Spinwam from Shawa tehsil in Mir Ali subdivision when the IED planted by unknown people on the main road exploded and caused injuries to the soldiers.

Residents said the troops opened fire after the blast in which a local villager was reportedly killed. A security official, however, insisted the soldiers opened fire in self-defence after the military convoy was attacked with an IED. He said three security personnel were killed on the spot and 16 others were injured.

Two gunship helicopters were immediately sent from Miranshah military base to the blast site and it pounded the suspected hideouts of the militants. The injured troops were later flown in the Pakistan Army helicopter and admitted to a military hospital.

The local administration usually clamps curfew in most parts of North Waziristan on Sunday for movement of the security forces in the tribal region.
