Three rapists hanged

LAHORE, July 19 2006: Three men, who were convicted of raping two women in the Punjab, were hanged in central jail of Lahore, jail officials said. The men, named as Ejaz Ahmed, Shahid and Muhammad Akram were executed in central prison, Jail Deputy Superintendent Muhammad Ashraf said. The bodies were later handed over to relatives, who were waiting and offering special prayers outside the jail. Jail officials said that the three men were accused of raping a woman Irshad Bibi in her house after committing robbery in district Sheikhupura.

The Anti-Terrorism Court had handed down death penalty to the three men and Higher Court and Supreme Court had rejected their appeals and President Pervez Musharraf had also dismissed their mercy appeals. Some 18 people have been hanged in less than three weeks in the Punjab.
