Thirsty Thar receives few drops of rain

UMERKOT: It rained sparsely and lightly for 15 minutes in the vast Thar Desert late on Tuesday evening, rekindling hopes of water-starved Tharis the insufficient rain may become a harbinger of life-sustaining rains to come.

The villages of Ratnor, Menhrro, Ramsar, Kaplore, Viklokar, Roheraro, Umerkot town, Chelhar, Islamkot and Khario of Tharparkar district received the light downpour.

Growers who had been waiting for rains for almost a year said they had started preparing land for crops in the areas where it had rained though lightly in hope it would herald more rains and help them grow crops.

They said that they required at least four rains with a gap of 20 days to have good crops in Thar. Otherwise, it would not help them much, they said.

The light rain which continued for 15 minutes can cause low-growing grass fit for goats and sheep to grow but if it did not rain again within a week the grass will dry up soon.
