The News staffer takes second place

Karachi: A Pakistani journalist’s entry stood second in the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) — Thomson Reuters Environmental Media Award 2012.

The News staffer Desiree Francis’s story titled “If NGOs were a political party, we’d vote for them!” was declared first runner-up in the award which received 162 entries from 48 countries and a total of 26,274 votes. The articles focused on an environmental issues relating nature to human well-being.

The story revolved around the plight of the victims of the floods in 2010 in Pakistan and was earlier published in The News.

The 2012 award was hosted on a social media forum. The first prize went to Diogo Veríssimo from Portugal, who will receive an all-expenses-paid trip to Jeju Island, South Korea, to attend the 2012 World Conservation Congress.

Established in 1998 by Thomson Reuters Foundation and IUCN, the award aims to raise global awareness of environmental and sustainable development issues by encouraging high standards in environmental reporting worldwide.
