The Nation staffer tortured in line of duty

ISLAMABAD – A repulsive incident of torture against media occurred here on Monday evening when enraged workers of Islami Jamiat Talaba (IJT), the students wing of Jamat-e-Islami, violently tortured working journalists covering a protest rally of IJT and broke the arm bone of a photo journalist.

Scores of IJT students thrashed journalists, broke their cameras as well as arm of a senior photojournalist. The Nation staff photographer also received severe injuries during the attack.

The incident took place at Aabpara when the students of the said organisation staged a protest demonstration where numbers of journalist were performing their duties. The enraged protesters thrashed the journalist brutality for reasons best known to them.

The IJT workers also broke arm of a senior photojournalist critically injuring journalists. Police had to halt the Jamiat’s students violence and police also used light baton charge to disperse the attackers and arrested 4 of them who have been identified as Altaf, Ahsan, Zafran, and Kashif Nawaz.

Till the filing of this report, no FIR had been registered against the accused. Syed Mehdi was admitted to the Polyclinic where a minor operation was conducted and his condition is out of danger now.

The entire staff of The Nation condemned the brutal attack on their colleague and prayed for his early recovery.
