Telecom authority seeks Y2K compliance

ISLAMABAD (Reuters): Pakistani telecom service providers will face strict penalties if their computer systems are not millennium compliant by the end of September, the industry regulator said.

“Appropriate penalties to the non-compliant operators may be imposed which may also lead to the disconnection of the system…… a letter from the authority to the companies said.

Abbas Chaudhry, Year 2000 coordinator at the Pakistan Telecommunications Authority said the Pakistan Telecommunications Company Ltd, cellular telephone operators, data network operators and Internet providers, have all been asked to respond by April 15 with a compliance plan.
