Islamabad: The Supreme Court (SC) has barred the acting Chairman of Pakistan Electronic Media Regulatory Authority (PEMRA) Dr Abdul Jabbar from discharging his duties, Geo News reported Thursday.

The SC was hearing the petition filed by senior journalists’ Hamid Mir and Absar Alam regarding the formation of a media commission.

During the hearing, Justice Jawwad S Khawaja remarked that PEMRA has been unable to appoint a permanent chairman for the past one and a half year. Dr Abdul Jabbar was appointed as a caretaker but he had been passing orders in abundance. Therefore, he cannot continue any further as the acting chairman.

While ordering the government to appoint a permanent chairman, the SC adjourned the hearing till one week. While talking to the media outside the SC building, petitioner Hamid Mir told that the court accepted his stand and has stopped the acting chairman from functioning.
