Sri Lanka Premier to open South Asia Media Meet in Colombo

Colombo, Aug 16: Sri Lanka Prime Minister Ratnasiri Wickramanayaka is expected to open Sixth South Asian Media Conference in Colombo on August 18, 2007.

Annual sessions of South Asia Free Media Association (SAFMA), is being held in Colombo this year with media leaders representing SAFMA chapters in all eight SAARC member nations participating.

Theme of this year is Media and Poverty Alleviation. The invited keynote speaker will be 2006 Nobel Peace Laureate Dr. Muhammed Yunus of Bangladesh.

Prominent personalities of South Asia’s expanding media industry, from print, radio, TV, Net media, will attend two-day conference. They include some 130 journalists from Afghanistan, Bangladesh, Bhutan, India, The Maldives, Nepal, Pakistan and 70 Sri Lankan media professionals.

SAFMA, founded in Islamabad, Pakistan in 2000, today has chapters in all eight SAARC countries and is affiliated with SAARC as region’s premier media professionals body.
