Social media threat

Pakistan Press Foundation

Sir: The social media is the largest interconnecting network around the world today. It can connect millions of people at a time but it also has plenty of disastrous impacts on youngsters. Social media is now becoming a serious security and moral threat for our teenagers and their parents. Misuse of social media has initiated a war between parents and children. Extensive use of social media is causing depression, psychiatric issues, eyesight problems and moral uncertainty in our society.

Kidnappings through Facebook dummy accounts are increasing. A survey conducted in June 2013 revealed that more than 83 million Facebook accounts are fake. These problems need to be controlled at this stage otherwise it will lead to the complete destruction of our generation. The Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA) must take urgent notice of this new threat emerging rapidly and form a proper mechanism of checks and balances for social media users, especially for the people who are using fake accounts. Parents are also requested not to give a free hand to children about using the internet. There should be proper time allocation for internet usage and children must be educated about the disadvantages of social media.
