Sindhi poet Aajiz Ujjan dies at 65

SANGHAR: Sindhi poet Sher Mohammad Ujjan, better known as Aajiz Ujjan, passed away on Tuesday after a brief illness in his native village near Perumal, 40 kilometres from Sanghar.

He was 65 years old. He was laid to rest in Buharam Bari graveyard in his village. He leaves a son.

Ujjan became popular when one of his songs, sung by famous Sindhi singer Anwer Hussain Vistro, was aired by Radio Pakistan, Hyderabad, in the 1970s. Since then around 100 songs written by Ujjan, a retired high schoolteacher, have been broadcast by Radio Pakistan, Hyderabad, Karachi and Khairpur.

Besides Anwar Hussain Vistro, Ujjan’s poetry has been sung by legendary Sindhi singer Ustad Jumman, and others including Jalal Chandio and Photo Zardari.

Ujjan also wrote poems for the Movement for the Restoration of Democracy against the Zia regime. His book Ishq Adheri Val was published in 2012. He was described as an outstanding poet by such men of letters as Muhammad Zaman Talibul Mola, Ustad Bukhari and Tajal Bewas.
