Sindh government introduces smart card system

KARACHI: Sindh Information Minister Sharjeel Inam Memon on Monday said that among all the provincial governments it is Sindh government, which leads in linking the computerised data of its employees to National Data Registration Authority (NADRA) system.

Speaking to media, after inaugurating NADRA’s Smart Card Centre here at Sindh Secretariat, the information minister said that this facility would help the government to get full information about any employee within seconds and complete information of around 450,000 employees of Sindh government would be available on this network that would include birth date, date of retirement, academic qualification, transfers and postings.

This system would be very beneficial for the government employees as well under the first phase, it has been launched in Karachi which would be later expanded to other districts of the province, he said. The smart card centre is a joint project of NADRA and Sindh government.

He said that the Sindh government under self-accountability policy has discovered 26,000 ghost employees in various departments in the province. They would be terminated and replaced with new ones.

The Sindh information minister said that as per information gathered from the Sindh Accountant General office, 328,000 identity cards were verified that had led to discovery of the ghost employees whose complete data is with NADRA.

Through this new system/facility, 327,000 computerised national identity cards were got verified. Of these, the record of 21,430 cards was not found, 73,000 cards were learnt to be made manually, of which the record of 20,000 cards was missing.

The minister told the media that 381 employees had expired but payment of their salaries continued to date and 16,065 employees had tempered with their birth dates. 1,264 employees were getting their salaries from two government organisations simultaneously. NADRA has blocked 638 cards.

Memon said that the Sindh government has first presented itself for accountability.

On this occasion, Director General NADRA Brigadier Zahid Hussain, Sindh Minister Excise and Taxation Mukesh Kumar Chawla, Member Sindh Assembly Imdad Pitafee, Sindh Secretary Information Qazi Shahid Pervaiz was also present.
