Sherry Rehman terms anti-media resolution a mistake

Karachi: Former federal Information Minister Sherry Rehman, while lauding and signing on the memorandum for the provision of legal assistance to women journalists, stated that the media has to make its own code of conduct.

Speaking at a convention for women journalists organised by the Karachi Union of Journalists (KUJ) at the Karachi Arts Council on Saturday, Sherry Rehman said the resolution tabled in the Punjab Assembly against the media was moved and approved by both the government and the opposition, which was a wrong step.

A large number of women journalists belonging to print and electronic media participated in the seminar. On the occasion, the Pakistan Women Lawyers Association (PWLA) and the KUJ inked a memorandum of understanding (MoU), under which, legal guidance and free legal assistance would be provided to women journalists, whenever needed.

Sherry Rehman said that big sacrifices were given for the sake of media freedom, adding, that there is a dire need of constant efforts to continue it.

To a question regarding resolution against media in the Punjab Assembly, she said all parties were involved in the process; however, the step was taken without consultation of central leaders.

Earlier, KUJ President Afzal Mohsin said that women journalists working in both electronic and print media sometimes face problems in regard to being discharged of their professional duties.
