Sherry pledges to protect media workers’ rights

ISLAMABAD: Information Minister Sherry Rehman on Thursday said the government was committed to reviewing the existing labour laws to bring them in conformity with international standards.

Rehman was addressing a seminar titled “Destiny of Newspaper Employees in a Democratic Government: When Will Change Come?”, organised by All Pakistan Newspaper Employees Confederation (APNEC) in connection with the International Labour Day. She assured newspapers employees that the government would utilise all resources to address their problems and protect their rights. She said all such laws, regulations and systems, which contradicted interests of workers, would be abolished. She said a summary on the special fund for the journalist who died in the line of duty had already been sent to the federal cabinet for approval.

The minister the Pakistan People’s Party (PPP)-led coalition government had fulfilled its promise of repealing derogatory PEMRA laws through the parliament. She said her government wanted a strong parliament, an independent judiciary and a prosperous Pakistan.
