Shami elected Council of Pakistan Newspaper Editors (CPNE) President

LAHORE- Council of Pakistan Newspaper Editors (CPNE) Standing Committee meeting held under the chairmanship of Arif Nizami unanimously elected Mujibur Rehman Shami Chief Editor, daily Pakistan as President, Jamil Athar Chief Editor, daily Tijarat as Senior Vice-President, Zahid Malik Chief Editor, Pakistan Observer as Secretary General, Shaheen Qureshi Coordination Editor, daily Jang, as Joint Secretary Mahmoodul Aziz Editor, Pictorial News Review as Vice-President and Amir Mehmood Editor, Khawateen Digest as Secretary Finance. Following were elected by unanimous vote to the thirty seats of standing committee.

Six seats of Karachi dailies:

Dawn, Business Recorder, Awami Awaz, Dianut, Aghaz and Qaumi Akhbar.

Lahore six seats:

Jang, Nawa-i-Waqt, Pakistan, Khabrain, Musawat and Tijarat.

Rawalpindi/Islamabad: Two seats:

Pakistan Observer and Wifaq.

Balochistan two seats:

Balochistan Times and Awam.

NWFP two seats:

Wahdat and Jehad.

Punjab excluding Lahore and Rawalpindi three seats:

Saadat, Aftab, Business Report.

Sindh excluding Karachi two seats:

Ibrat and Kaleem.

Periodicals:

Khawateen Digest, Moon Digest, Cricketor; Pictorial Review, Nai Ufq, Urdu Digest, Friday Times.

Speaking after being elected President CPNE Mujibur Rehman Shami pledged that newly elected office-bearers will leave no stone unturned to safeguard freedom of Press especially in view of changed political scenario. He lauded the efforts of outgoing President Arif Nizami for protecting the right of expression guaranteed in the Constitution. Mentioning the names of M.A. Zuberi, Syed Fasih Iqbal, Inqilab Matri, Arif Nizami who served CPNE as Presidents in the past, he said the new leadership would benefit from their experience and vision. All the four former Presidents on his request addressed the members of Standing Committee and assured of their full cooperation for the fulfillment of CPNE Charter with special reference to the freedom of print media.

Newly-elected Secretary General Zahid Malik while addressing the meeting assured that he will try his level best to establish and organise CPNE Secretariat.

Earlier outgoing Secretary General Ilyas Shakir read annual report before the General Body and Senior Vice-President Anwar Farooqi submitted annual accounts for approval which was granted unanimously.
