Shahbaz urges media not to create panic

LAHORE: Punjab Chief Minister Shahbaz Sharif paid surprise visits to the Mayo and General Hospitals on Thursday and inspected special counters and wards set up for dengue fever patients.

The CM also inquired about the treatment facilities being extended to dengue patients. Members National and Provincial Assemblies also accompanied him.

Talking to the media, the chief minister said that all resources were being utilized to cope with the challenge of dengue virus and, besides provision of best medical facilities, a vigorous public awareness campaign had also been launched on preventive measures.

Seeking cooperation of masses to control the dengue virus, Shahbaz Sharif said that dengue virus was 100 percent curable, stressing the need to promote awareness among the people in this regard.

He said that, besides government hospitals, free medical facilities were also being provided to dengue patients in private hospitals. He warned that action would be taken against hospitals that did not entertainthe request of the government in this regard. He said that it was the responsibility of private hospitals to provide free treatment facilities to the poor and deserving patients in this hour of trial and allocate special beds for this purpose.

Appreciating Chughtai Lab, the CM said that 10 collection centres had been set up under the collaboration between the Punjab government and Chughtai Lab and it was an excellent example of public service. He said that educational institutions had been closed so that they could undertake preventive measures and fumigation on their premises.

He urged the media to point out weaknesses and flaws of the government, but in a manner which did not create panic among the public.

Later, the chief minister visited the helpline at Aiwan-e-Iqbal. and monitored its performance regarding provision of information to the people about dengue virus. The CM was informed that thousands of calls were being received at the helpline daily from all over the country and people were being provided useful information about dengue virus.

Meanwhile, Punjab CM Shahbaz Sharif presided over a high level meeting at the Chief Ministerís Secretariat to review measures against dengue virus. Sri Lankan experts, Members National and Provincial Assemblies, secretaries of various departments, religious scholars and senior doctors were also present.
