Senior journalist beaten up in Hyderabad

Sarfraz Wistro, chief reporter of Sindhi language “Daily Ibrat”, Hyderabad, was beaten up by unknown persons, near his residence on Thursday, July 22, 2010 night.

Wistro told PPF that when his friends dropped him at his residence around 2am (local time), on the gate of building, five peoples waiting in a white car attacked him. Wistro said they were wearing hand clips and thrashed his face, shoulder, arms, hands and legs mercilessly. They snatched his mobile phone and cash of 12000 rupees ($ 140) and kept thrashing him till he lost consciousness. The attackers ran away as watchmen and some other people rushed to save him.

Wistro was rushed to the Civil Hospital Hyderabad for first aid treatment where his condition was reported to be out of danger. Wistro said he is not sure about the reason of attack and about the attackers’ identity. But he believed he was attacked due to his journalistic activities. He has lodged a report with the police against five unknown assailants.

A large number journalist held a protest rally front of Hyderabad Press Club on Friday. Journalists condemned the attack and demanded that the government take stern action against attackers. They also demanded of the government to take measures for the protection of working journalists.
