Senate resolution against journalist’s sacking

By: Mohammad Anis

ISLAMABAD: Some members of the Senate Monday raised the issue of Nusrat Javed’s sacking, asking the government to expose those behind his sacking.

Senator Humayun Khan Mandokhel said Dr. Zulfiqar Mirza’s allegations against Senator Rehman Malik were a matter of concern for all patriotic Pakistanis. “The allegations that Rehman Malik is a security threat to the country should be given serious thought,” he said.

The senator said the prime minister should ask his interior minister to resign till the inquiry was completed against him and that he should also be detained.

Senator Dr. Ismail Buledi of the JUI-F endorsed Senator Mandokhel’s views saying it was a serious matter concerning national security and the government should take serious notice of the allegations against the federal interior minister.

MQM Senator Babar Khan Ghouri said the issue of the anchorperson’s sacking should not be politicised. At this ANP’s Zahid Khan said he did not name any particular party, and therefore should be allowed to move a resolution to condemn the removal of the journalist.

The chair allowed Zahid Khan to move the resolution in the house bearing signatures of 13 members from the ANP, PML-N, Jamaat-e-Islami, PML-Q and other groups. The resolution was not signed by any senator belonging to the PPP or MQM.

Deputy chairman Jan Mohammad Jamali referred the resolution to the house committee. The mover reminded the chair that the resolution should be put before the house for passage. The house could not reach consensus on the resolution but the chair ruled that it stood approved.
