Senate body for bringing women into mainstream

ISLAMABAD: Comprising half of the country’s total population, women need to be brought into the mainstream of national life, observes the Senate Standing Committee on Women Development.

The committee observed this while visiting the Women Welfare and Development Centre, being run by the Ministry of Social Welfare and Special Education here on Wednesday. The committee added that the women strata had comparatively few opportunities for socio-economic development and a large majority was still devoid of all modern day facilities.

“Therefore, they have been unable to make any significant contribution towards the overall development of the country. This situation has to be changed in order to quicken our transition towards economic prosperity and improved quality of life,” said the committee. The committee underlined the need to train women in marketable skills like cutting, sewing and stitching, dress designing, embroidery, knitting and cooking. It also stressed the need to make arrangements for marketing of their products without involving any middleman who usually eats up most of the profit.

“Our women are endowed with tremendous potential, which need to be channelized for constructive purposes,” the committee said. The committee also advised to provide women with stalls at the Sunday Bazaars where they could sell their products.
